Results

I4HB, the Institute for Health and Bioeconomy Associated Laboratory, is the result of a strategic partnership between three research units: the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences(iBB), the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering - Microsystems and Nanotechnologies(INESC-MN) and the Applied Biomolecular Sciences Unit(UCIBIO), based on solid scientific and technological skills in the emerging and priority areas of Health and Bioeconomy.

This consortium has been granted Associate Laboratory status by the Science and Technology Foundation(FCT) and aims to contribute to national and international public policies through the dissemination of four Thematic Lines (TL) of research, such as the platform for the discovery and development of medicines, advanced diagnostics and therapies, human health and environmental safety and the valorization of bio-resources and the production of bio-products.

With multiple lines of research and different target audiences, i4HB needed a digital presence that:

  • Gather dispersed scientific information in a single portal;
  • Communicate clearly with researchers, citizens and government bodies;
  • Support the internationalization of research through a multilingual platform;
  • Ensure digital accessibility and compliance with security and data protection standards.

JAVALI developed i4HB's new institutional portal in Drupal 9, creating a robust, secure and scalable platform. The main elements of the solution include:

  • Modular architecture prepared for future growth;
  • Simplified editorial management, allowing autonomy for the i4HB team;
  • Implementation of accessibility in accordance with WCAG standards;
  • Responsive and mobile-first design, adapted to any device;
  • Multilingual support to strengthen our international presence;
  • Compliance with the GDPR, guaranteeing protection of sensitive data.

The new i4HB portal has become a real digital meeting point for researchers, public bodies and civil society. Developed in Drupal 9, the project has brought clear and strategic results for the consortium:

  • Centralization of scientific information in a single portal, simplifying access to the four Thematic Lines of research.
  • Increased institutional visibility at national and international level, through a multilingual platform prepared to communicate with different audiences.
  • Reinforcement of digital accessibility, ensuring that any user, regardless of their limitations, can access research content and results.
  • Editorial autonomy for the i4HB team, with simple and flexible tools for managing and updating content in real time.
  • A scalable technological base that ensures the portal's continuous evolution and supports new research and scientific cooperation initiatives.

More than just a website, the new portal positions i4HB as a benchmark consortium in the field of health and bioeconomics, with a solid digital infrastructure that amplifies the impact of scientific knowledge and brings research closer to society.

Contribution to the Drupal community

During the project, the JAVALI team strengthened its active role in the Drupal community, applying and sharing good practices related to accessibility, editorial management and standardization of digital processes. One of the highlights was the evolution of the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) module, developed by JAVALI and subsequently made available to the community, allowing for the efficient integration and management of persistent identifiers in scientific projects.

The know-how consolidated in this portal not only met i4HB's specific needs, but also gave rise to methodologies that can be reused in future Drupal projects focused on science, research and knowledge valorization.
