“The work carried out in partnership with JAVALI proved to be a decisive asset in ensuring the curation and availability, in open and free access, of databases with relevant information on the medieval period. The technical expertise and flexibility of the company and its employees, combined with their ability to listen to the specific needs and challenges of research on the Middle Ages, have enabled the implementation of robust, sustainable, and interoperable digital solutions, ensuring data integrity and long-term access. Thanks to this collaboration, it is possible to continue to disseminate, promote, and share the knowledge produced by the IEM and its researchers with the academic community and the general public, thereby promoting greater inclusion in scientific knowledge."

The Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM), part of FCSH, brings together several essential databases for historical research. The need to update technology, ensure accessibility, and simplify access led to the creation of a new platform in Drupal 10—more stable, responsive, and user-friendly.

The developed solution provides open and free access to the entire collection, with clear navigation, optimized performance, and a consistent experience for researchers, students, and the general public.

The existing portal presented technical and structural limitations. IEM required a modern solution that was easy to manage and prepared for future growth. The main challenges included:

  • Upgrading the platform to a stable and sustainable technology;
  • Ensuring full data migration without any loss;
  • Creating a simple and efficient back office for the editorial team;
  • Improving usability and reducing navigation complexity;
  • Making the website available in PT/EN to strengthen international visibility;
  • Preserving the diversity and depth of the four databases;
  • Ensuring compatibility with mobile devices and major browsers.

The goal was to deliver a clear, accessible, and intuitive experience aligned with IEM’s scientific mission.

JAVALI developed a completely new platform in Drupal 10, with a modular architecture and a strong focus on user experience. The adopted approach included:

  • Complete and validated migration of all databases;
  • Modular structure, prepared for future evolution;
  • Simplified editorial interface with more intuitive management workflows;
  • Responsive and accessible design, optimized for mobile devices;
  • Multilingual system for PT/EN with automatic translations;
  • Advanced search tools and cross-filtering;
  • Integration of typologies, metadata, and categories specific to each database;
  • Security, permission, and auditing mechanisms aligned with FCSH policies.

The result is a stable, accessible platform prepared for the current and future needs of academic research.

The modernization to Drupal 10 delivered immediate benefits for IEM, both in user experience and internal management.

Key results:

  • Open and free access to structured and validated content;
  • More intuitive navigation with advanced filters and improved organization;
  • Loss-free migration, ensuring scientific continuity;
  • Full editorial autonomy for the IEM team;
  • Improved technical performance and mobile compatibility;
  • Platform ready for new databases and future functionalities.
