UCCLA — the Union of Portuguese-Speaking Capital Cities — is an international organization that promotes cooperation among cities and companies in the Lusophone world, aiming to strengthen infrastructure and foster economic, social, cultural, and technological development.

In 2024, JAVALI rebuilt the entire UCCLA website using Drupal 10, creating a modern, accessible, and intuitive platform.
The new portal reflects the organization’s identity and mission, offering clear information architecture, responsive design, and tools that enhance collaboration and knowledge-sharing among its members.

UCCLA needed an inclusive and modern digital platform capable of communicating its international activities effectively while improving editorial autonomy. Key challenges included:

  • Migrating the previous Drupal 7 site to Drupal 10 while preserving historical data;
  • Redesigning the information architecture for faster access to news, projects, events, and publications;
  • Ensuring full WCAG 2.1 compliance and accessibility for all users;
  • Simplifying back-office workflows to allow autonomous content management;
  • Integrating multimedia features and UCCLA Virtual, offering immersive virtual-reality experiences.

JAVALI implemented the new site following best practices in accessibility, performance, and editorial management. Main highlights:

  • Complete migration from Drupal 7 → Drupal 10, preserving content and taxonomies;
  • Custom design and UX created by JAVALI’s in-house team;
  • Modular structure with dedicated sections for news, events, projects, and publications;
  • Integration of UCCLA Virtual for immersive video and VR content;
  • Simplified editorial management with configurable menus and fields;
  • Optimized technical SEO and fully responsive design;
  • Continuous technical maintenance and security updates by JAVALI.

The new website has become a central tool in UCCLA’s digital communication strategy, improving accessibility, visibility, and autonomy. Achievements include:

  • 20,000+ visits and over 150,000 tracked events since launch;
  • Faster load times and overall performance improvements;
  • A modern, intuitive interface that enhances user experience;
  • Greater visibility for UCCLA’s initiatives and international projects;
  • Full WCAG 2.1 compliance, ensuring universal accessibility;
  • Complete editorial independence for the communications team.
