FCT/UNL
Created in 1977, the Faculty of Science and Technology is today one of the most prestigious science and engineering schools, with a total of around 7,500 students, including 1,400 postgraduate and doctoral students.
With the support of 500 teachers and researchers (320 with PhDs) and 220 non-teaching staff, the FCT is structured into 14 Departmental Sectors, 8 Support Services and 16 Research Centers.
The diversity of departments and services required integrated digital solutions that:
- Provided organized and accessible information in different areas (employment, accommodation, teaching staff, events);
- Replaced previous PHP/proprietary-based systems, which were inflexible and difficult to maintain;
- Facilitated autonomous content management by FCT's internal teams;
- Ensured scalability, digital accessibility, and integration with existing institutional systems.
JAVALI was the technology partner chosen to support FCT in the development and maintenance of various digital platforms using Drupal, including:
- Migration of the institutional portal (fct.unl.pt);
- Creation of the employment platform (emprego.fct.unl.pt);
- Development of the accommodation (alojamento.fct.unl.pt), teaching staff (docentes.fct.unl.pt), and events (eventos.fct.unl.pt) platforms;
All solutions were designed based on reusable Drupal modules, ensuring editorial consistency, management autonomy, and the capacity for continuous evolution.
Since the launch of the job platform, more than 3,000 candidates have registered and 1,800 job offers have been published, distributed among 600 national and international companies.
The platforms developed have simplified internal processes and created a robust digital ecosystem for the FCT community, with:
- Integrated and intuitive content management through a unified back office;
- Common features based on Drupal, allowing scaling or creation of new services without additional reimplementation costs;
- Improved user experience, with responsive design accessible on all devices;
- Enhanced visibility and digital identity of FCT within the academic and scientific community.

- Drupal 7 (latest stable version at the time of launch)

- Responsive and mobile-first design with multimedia content integration (video, galleries, infographics);
- Simplified back office for autonomous editorial management;

- Compliance with digital accessibility best practices;
- Custom development in PHP/Drupal, with implementation of specific features;
- Federated authentication systems (e.g., Shibboleth) for integration with institutional infrastructures.
Contribution to the Drupal community
The partnership with FCT/UNL allowed JAVALI to consolidate its experience in managing multiple integrated Drupal platforms for higher education institutions.
The know-how acquired has strengthened the development of reusable methodologies applied to complex academic contexts, contributing with improvements and good practices that have been shared with the Drupal community.
