From June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will come into force, a European Union directive that sets new accessibility standards for a wide range of digital products and services. The aim is to ensure that all people, including those with disabilities, have equal access to technology and essential services, promoting a more inclusive society.
What will change with the EAA?
The new regulations apply to areas such as e-commerce, digital banking (home banking and mobile apps), digital books and reading platforms, as well as self-service terminals such as ATMs and payment kiosks, among others. With this measure, companies will be obliged to ensure that their products and services meet minimum accessibility requirements, ensuring that they are designed from the outset to include everyone.
Although some micro-enterprises (with fewer than 10 employees) may benefit from exemptions in certain situations, the vast majority of organizations operating in the European market will have to adapt to the new requirements.
The EAA determines that digital products must be developed in accordance with standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA and the European standard EN 301 549, ensuring that they are perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. In addition to legal compliance, this adaptation also represents an opportunity for companies to differentiate themselves in the market, reaching a wider and more diverse audience.
Non-compliance could result in penalties and the loss of business opportunities
